Men in Crisis

While Goethe’s Werther and Büchner’s Lenz are arguably two of the best-known male characters experiencing severe crises, a closer look reveals that German-language literature is full of men who are no longer able or willing to adhere to the male roles society expects them to fill. Often their desire to escape finds expression in the pursuit of “forbidden” love objects, travel to heterotopic spaces, or engagement in activities not condoned by society. These rebellious acts end in the male protagonists’ deaths or madness, or in their re-entry into society, thus either confirming or undermining the social order.

This call for papers seeks contributions that explore the notion of male crisis in German literature since the eighteenth century. Comparative approaches or the inclusion of other media, e.g., film or visual arts, are welcome. Please direct inquiries and send abstracts of ca. 250 words to Esther Bauer at bauere@vt.edu by January 31, 2012. Presenters must be members of the GSA.
