Short German Prose Texts in 18th and 19th Century: Authors, audiences, genres

43nd Annual Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
March 15-18, 2012
Rochester, New York – Hyatt Rochester
Host Institution: St. John Fisher College
Keynote speaker: Jennifer Egan, 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner, A Visit from the Goon Squad

This panel will examine the implications of the social and literary contexts of short prose writing popular in 18th and 19th century Germany. In what ways were the discourses of gender, religion, and class carried out by defining appropriateness of texts? What continuity can be seen from these literary forms to the present day, and which are more tightly bound to the specific historical moments such as the Enlightenment or Romanticism? Papers can be presented in German or in English. 250 word abstracts should be sent to Jessica Riviere (jessica.riviere@vanderbilt.edu)

Deadline: September 30, 2011
Please include with your abstract:
Name and Affiliation
Email address
Postal address
Telephone number
A/V requirements (if any; $10 handling fee with registration)

Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NeMLA session; however, panelists can only present one paper (panel or seminar). Convention participants may present a paper at a panel and also present at a creative session or participate in a roundtable.
