|Titel||The Other Jewish Question. A CJCR Colloquium with Jay Geller, Vivian Liska, Liliane Weissberg and Lars Fischer (Cambridge)|
|Beschreibung||Since the 1990s Jay Geller has made an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the ways in which the question of Central European modernity has been inseparable from the Jewish Question. On the one hand, he has explored how modernizing German-speaking cultures, undergoing their own processes of identity formation, responded to the narcissistic threat posed by the continued persistence of Judentum (Judaism, Jewry, Jewishness) with fetish-producing practices that identified ‘the Jew’ and secured Judentum’s difference. On the other hand, he has demonstrated how some individuals, identified as Jews and immersed in the phantasmagoria of such figurations, had their own question, the Other Jewish Question, and their own answers: they employed the notions of Jewish difference that haunted the Central European cultural imagination as building blocks in working through their particular situations, constructing their diverse responses, and shaping our world.
Marking the publication of Geller’s new book, The Other Jewish Question (Fordham University Press)—the companion volume to his On Freud’s Jewish Body (also Fordham)—and his tenure as a Visiting Fellow at the CJCR, this colloquium will offer an opportunity to engage Geller’s work intimately by focusing on three figures central to his account: Marx, Kafka, and Freud. Vivian Liska (Kafka), Liliane Weissberg (Freud), and Lars Fischer (Marx) will offer detailed responses to Geller’s work and its usefulness for their own research, followed by a response from Geller and a concluding round table.
