The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of
Newcastle upon Tyne is pleased to announce a suite of new Faculty and
Research Council studentships, bursaries and scholarships available
throughout its nine schools.

Our postgraduates are in demand across a wide range of careers and we
are one of the UK s top 20 Universities targeted by graduate
employers. This is due, in part, to our excellent all-round
reputation and also to our commitment to innovative approaches to
teaching and learning. We have more than 4,000 postgraduate students
at the University from over a hundred different countries,
representing a vibrant and valued part of our academic community. Our
facilities are state-of-the-art and we are able to offer
postgraduates an unrivalled learning experience.

NEW POSTGRADUATE STUDENTSHIPS WORTH £15,550 EACH!!!

We are delighted to announce Economic and Social Research (ESRC)
quota awards and the introduction of new Faculty Scholarships
available in every academic school, and valued up to £15,550 (subject
to inflation). In the Arts and Humanities, funding is attached to a
Research Council application. YOU MUST APPLY THROUGH THE SCHOOL FOR
AHRC FUNDING BY 1/03/06 TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THESE STUDENTSHIPS. For
ESRC quota and competition applications should be made through
schools by 1/3/06. Please contact the school you are interested in
for more details or contact the HASS Graduate School on 0191 222 5803
or e-mail hss.gradschool@ncl.ac.uk. In addition, the Faculty is
pleased to announce Newcastle International Postgraduate Scholarships
(NIPS) of £1,500 - £3,000, which are available across the academic
schools. If you are an international student, please contact the
school you are interested in for more details. The closing date for
NIPS is the 23rd of May 2006, and students with offers from Newcastle
University will be sent an application form.

In addition to the Faculty Scholarships and Studentships, academic
schools are offering the following awards:

School of Modern Languages

The School of Modern Languages is a leading centre for teaching and
research in a range of subject areas with a strong emphasis on inter-
disciplinarity: French Studies, German Studies, Spanish, Portugese
and Latin American Studies, East Asian Studies, Film Studies,
Linguistics and Translation and Interpreting. We invite applicants
for our Postgraduate programmes (full-time and part-time) with start
date of September 2006.

- MA in Linguistics and Language Acquisition
- MA in Film Studies
- MA in Professional Translation (European Languages)
- Diploma and MA in Translation and Interpreting (Chinese or Japanese)
- Mlitt and PhD in French, German, Spanish, Latin American Studies,
Film Studies, East Asian Studies, and Linguistics, including
interdisciplinary topics
- IPhD in Translation and Interpreting (Chinese or Japanese)
- IPhD in Film Studies

In 2006-2007 we have one School scholarship (funded jointly by the
Faculty) valued at £4,000 plus course fees (at the home rate). Those
eligible must have applied to the AHRC for funding. We also have two
postgraduate bursaries of £4,000 each which are available to both UK
