A one-day conference organised by the Centre for Modern European Literature, University of Kent and the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London

Friday, 20 May 2011

At the Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies, University of London (Room ST 274/275)

Co-Ordinators: Anna Katharina Schaffner (Kent/IGRS) and Shane Weller (Kent)

Characterized by radical epistemic shifts in the scientific investigation of sexuality and by the birth of psychoanalysis, the nineteenth century has been described as the century of the perversions. According to Michel Foucault, the attempt to define the normal and to regulate aberrant manifestations of the sexual drive resulted not in the repression of the deviant, but rather in the discursive production of a wide range of perverse types and new cultural identities, including the sadist and the masochist, the homosexual, the voyeur, and the fetishist.

It is not by accident that the names of two literary figures, the Marquis de Sade and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, were appropriated by clinical discourse to categorize sexual pathologies. Richard von Krafft-Ebing, Sigmund Freud and many other sexologists drew extensively on literary sources to illustrate their theoretical models. The exchange between literature and science, however, works in both directions: modernist writers, in turn, responded to and frequently revalorized medical and psychiatric models of the perversions.

This conference will explore the specificities of modernist eroticisms and how nineteenth- and early twentieth-century sexological discourses impact on modernist literature. It will also investigate the ways in which the erotic can function as a space for utopian cultural regeneration projects or as a platform for radical transgressions, cultural critique and subversions of existing norms and values.
