BeschreibungApril 16, 2011, 9:30 am – 4pm
Estabrook 303, Clark University, Worcester, MA

In late nineteenth-century German-speaking central Europe, political activists, medical scholars and literary authors focused their attention on sexuality, establishing a new vocabulary that soon came to structure the way people thought throughout the world. For the first time concepts emerged such as “homosexuality,” “heterosexuality,” “bisexuality,” “masochism,” “sadism,” “transvestism.” Scholars at this symposium will work with Clark students to investigate the reasons behind the emergence of these new discourses of sexuality.
