BeschreibungCALL FOR PAPERS for a Women-in-German-sponsored panel at the

MLA Annual Convention in Seattle January 5 - 8, 2012: New German-Russian Women Writers

This panel seeks to expand the exploration of transnational and translingual German literature by inviting papers on New German-Russian Women Writers, among them Alina Bronsky and Elena Gorelik, who have not yet been given as much attention as their male counterparts, Wladimir Kaminer and Vladimir Vertlib for example, or other transnational and translingual female authors such as Yoko Tawada and Emine Sevgi Özdamar. These New German-Russian Women Writers are part of a fairly large Russian speaking minority group in Germany and other European countries who came to the West during the waves of anti-Semitism in the Soviet Union in the 1970s, Perestroika and after the Collapse of the Soviet Union. We invite papers that examine the texts of these New German-Russian Women Writers and their female perspective on migration and contemporary life in Germany. Papers may address topics, including but not limited to: intersection of gender and ethnicity; integration/assimilation processes; Soviet Communist past vs. German Capitalist present; understanding of "home", "belonging" and "identity"; bilingualism; xenophobia.
Please, submit an abstract (250-300 words) and brief CV by March 1 to both Ekaterina Pirozhenko (; and Regine Schwarzmeier (
