Guest-Related Panel at the Annual Conference of the Coalition of Women in German
Yarrow Golf and Conference Center, Augusta, Michigan
With Yoko Tawada as the invited guest speaker at the Annual Conference of the Coalition of Women in German in 2011 (October 20-23), this panel aims to explore how art ruptures, transforms and transgresses perceptions of gender and race. Tawada has published in various genres and her texts have provoked discussions on art movements, the construction of the nation, and the connections between language and identity. Inspired by her work, we invite papers that focus on the ways in which artists such as Yoko Tawada integrate performative and multilingual aspects into their works in order to critically engage with and challenge the discursive constructions of gender and race. In light of the on-going debate about Germany as a multi-cultural society, the discussion of such works proves to be of increasing importance.
