BeschreibungWeimar Stars

German Studies Association Conference to be held in Louisville, Kentucky, September 22-25, 2011

Recent research has offered important revisions of Siegfried Kracauer’s and Lotte Eisner’s characterizations of Weimar cinema. Scholars have brought to our attention forgotten film genres—such as the fashion farce (Mila Ganeva) and shell shock films (Anton Kaes), to name just a few—they have emphasized the importance of commercially successful films within Weimar’s overall cinematic production, and they have revealed the significance of sound and technological innovations. However, research has paid only limited critical attention to one of Weimar’s most fascinating and modern phenomena: stardom.

This panel seeks to investigate Weimar stars and their status as idols of modernity and to shed light on their— now often forgotten— accomplishments and careers. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:

- Female stars like Pola Negri, Lya de Putti, Ossi Oswalda, Henny Porten, Lil Dagover, Brigitte Helm, Marlene Dietrich, Lilian Harvey, Renate Mueller, etc.
- Male stars like Harry Liedtke, Harry Piel, Curt Bois, Emil Janings, Conrad Veidt, Fritz Kortner, Rudolf Forester, Willi Fritsch, Gustav Fröhlich, Hermann Thimig, Hans Albers etc.
- The relationship between Weimar stars and their fans
- Weimar’s star system and its cultural specificity
- Weimar’s star system and its relationship to Hollywood
- Weimar stars and specific film genres
