Against the background of a renewed contemporary interest in empathy and its theoretical conceptualization, this panel aims to reconsider the historical school of “Einfühlungsästhetik” in its relation to the modern aesthetic. Starting in the late 19th century, the emerging school of “Einfühlungsästhetik” conceives of aesthetic experience as the imaginative displacement of the subject into the work of art. This model of empathetic engagement becomes a key focal point for aesthetic discussions in early twentieth-century Germany, not only within the academic circles of psychology and philosophy and the nascent discipline of art history, but also among the period’s writers and artists, whose work stages, challenges, and reconfigures the social and poetic functions of empathy. We invite papers addressing any aspect of Einfühlungsästhetik and its manifestations in early twentieth century poetics. Suggested topics include:
--Models and Metaphors of Empathy around 1900
--Methodological relationships between Aesthetics and Psychology
--Einfühlungsästhetik and contemporaneous developments in the sciences
--Empathy and Expressionism
--Empathy and "Poetics of Affect"
-- Abstraction and Empathy
--Contemporary interest in empathy and its relationship to its modernist incarnations
