TitelAuthorship, composition and textual interconnectedness of three 16th-century mystical texts. Die evangelische peerle, Vanden tempel onser sielen, and the Arnhem mystical sermons. A stylometric approa
BeschreibungThe Ruusbroecgenootschap, research centre associated with the Faculty of Arts of the University of Antwerp, is seeking to fill the following position:

Full-time collaborator (m/f) for the FWO-research project Authorship, composition and textual interconnectedness of three 16th-century mystical texts. Die evangelische peerle, Vanden tempel onser sielen, and the Arnhem mystical sermons. A stylometric approach (2011-2014)

A corpus of three closely related anonymous texts is witness to a sixteenth-century mystical renaissance in the Low Countries. These key texts – Die evangelische peerle, Vanden tempel onser sielen and the Arnhemse mystieke preken – emerged from a network of women around the St Agnes convent in Arnhem. The texts reveal a mixture of both literary interconnectedness and individual traits. The lexical, semantic, conceptual and stylistic similarities are counterbalanced by ideosyncracies of the texts and inconsistencies between and within the texts. This multifaceted interrelatedness is best done justice by a modern understanding of texts, characteristized by an awareness of the relative insignificance of authorship, and the composite and open-ended nature of texts.

The aim of this project is to merge traditional methods of literary analysis with those of stylometry to provide tools to translate nuanced perceptions into verifiable observations. The study of the particular case of Arnhem mystical texts has a double objective: (1) to gain a deeper understanding in the textual culture and the interconnectedness of original texts of the Arnhem mystics; (2) to further the effectiveness, applicability and acceptability in literary studies of the combineds method of close reading and computational techniques.
