Job description

The Department of European Studies at the University of Amsterdam consists of the three sections Modern European History, Eastern European Studies and Modern European Literature, and provides for a three-year BA and a one-year MA degree in European Studies. Ca. 1,000 students are presently enrolled, including many from abroad. Many of our courses are taught in English.

The new senior lecturer will be assigned to the Modern European Literature section, which combines expertise on the modern languages and literatures of Europe. The research undertaken by the academic staff of European Studies is embedded in UvA's Institute of Culture and History, and more specifically in the Research Programme ‘European Studies: Culture, Governance and Identity'. Combining a firm grounding in the humanities with political sciences, this programme has two prioritized research areas: ‘Nationalism and identity in and of Europe', and ‘National governance and transnational change in Europe'. The Senior Lecturer will collaborate closely with the chair of Modern European Literature, Prof. Joep Leerssen, in the context of his research as Netherlands Royal Academy (KNAW) professor on the articulation and instrumentalization of national/cultural self-images in nineteenth and twentieth-century Europe. The programme would welcome a scholar familiar with the theory of literary or cultural studies and with an interest in the circulation of ideas in different cultural fields and media.

In the area of teaching, the new associate professor / senior lecturer is expected to design and provide courses at BA, MA and Research MA level, in close cooperation with the colleagues of European Studies. He or she will also be involved in the supervision of BA, MA and PhD theses.

The new associate professor / senior lecturer is expected to take part in administrative duties in the section and the department. He or she will be a driving force in European Studies departmental affairs, and in the further development of our teaching and research programmes, including fundraising from government agencies and the private sector. Fluency in English and at least one other European language is expected; if Dutch is not the native language, proficiency is to be acquired within two years, with support from the Faculty. Enthusiasm, an interdisciplinary attitude, and a strong team spirit in an interdisciplinary environment are a must, and a broad international network is highly welcome.

We are looking for a senior scholar with a strong record of research and teaching in the transnational aspects of European culture and literature since 1800, with a comparative emphasis. PhD and post-doc experience is required, as well as broad teaching experience at BA, MA and PhD levels. Proven capacity to design, apply for, and direct joint research projects will be an important point for consideration.
Conditions of employment

This is a full-time tenured position, to be confirmed after an initial appointment for two years. Gross monthly salary for a full time appointment (38 hours a week) will be between €4,428 (scale 13) and €5,920 (scale 14).

The Faculty of Humanities provides education and conducts research with a strongly international profile in a large number of disciplines in the field of language and culture. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, the Faculty maintains close ties with many cultural institutes in the capital city. There are almost 1,000 employees affiliated with the Faculty, which has about 6,500 students.

New impulses are required in order to further develop education and research in the humanities. Therefore, the Faculty of Humanities is looking for academics at a range of levels who can serve as the new generation of lecturing staff. Candidates are expected to hold a PhD degree and to have a background in the humanities or related disciplines. Outstanding didactic qualities and an affinity with students are required. It is crucial that candidates are able to combine solid research with appealing teaching. It goes without saying that they should also be familiar with the latest developments in their field. The new UvA academics will contribute to the Faculty's envisaged expansion and modernisation by bridging the gap between the various disciplines. Consequently, all lecturing staff must be capable of teaching courses for more than one specific study programme.

The Faculty of Humanities offers you the opportunity to collaborate with leading scholars at research institutes that - partly as a result of their multidisciplinary approach - enjoy worldwide renown. Moreover, you will be teaching in a dynamic context in which new educational methods are being developed.

Together with other new lecturers you will participate in a comprehensive introductory programme. You will be supervised closely during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration. The introductory programme includes earning the 'basic training qualification'.
