BeschreibungCall for Papers: Nach welchen Werten leben wir? / Which values inform our lives?

How do our world views and the realities in which we live connect across a large variety of world cultures? What informs our thoughts and emotions when we make decisions affecting our personal lives?

We, participants in the research project Wertewelten (“value worlds”), a group of professors and graduate students of Literary Studies and Law at the University of Tübingen in Germany, are interested in learning about processes that influence our individual preferences and affect our behavior. We are particularly interested in understanding values, norms, or rules that people consider relevant in their daily decision-making processes. Why do we help people? Why do we insult a person? Why do we decide one way or another? Why do we hate, love, or despise one another? What pleases us, and why? What do we expect and hope that our future holds in store for us?

We invite graduate students of literature or law to participate in this study by writing a short text. This may be in the shape of an essay, a story, narrative, or report, a reflection on everyday experiences or routine that illustrates the existence of values or, as the case may be, their absence or uselessness. The more subjective, personal, and authentic the texts the better.

Eligibility: Graduate students of literature or law between the age of 20 and 30

Languages: German, English

Publication: Of all texts received, a number of contributions will be selected for publication in an essay collection. The texts will be published in their original language and in German translation.

Scholarship: 10 contributions will be awarded a one-semester scholarship for study and/or research at the University of Tübingen (flights plus scholarship; must be used between October 2010 and March 2012)
