BeschreibungWORKSHOP: MATERIAL CULTURES. Case Studies and Perspectives in a Cross-Disciplinary Field of Research

Workshop at the University of Cologne
Center for Advanced Studies Morphomata: Genesis, Dynamics and Mediality of Cultural Figurations
May 17-18, 2010

As a cross-disciplinary field of research material culture studies have been shaped by various disciplines. Historically speaking, cultural anthropology and archaeology have both taken material culture as their starting point, whereas disciplines like literary studies have only recently turned to the material factors and aspects of their objects of research. The workshop will discuss the different disciplinary approaches from both a theoretical point of view and by means of case studies against the background of the Center for Advanced Studies Morphomata’s research program. Morphomata explores the genesis, dynamics and mediality of cultural figurations, focusing on the material manifestation of ideas, concepts, symbols and knowledge systems – what we named “morphomes”. The question to which extent objects of material culture do not only carry and convey cultural meanings, but generate and shape meanings, practices and systems of knowledge – precisely by means of their specific as well as partly contingent form and materiality – is pivotal here. The workshop intends to explore ways of connecting the term “morphome” to the field of material culture studies and of gaining insights from cross-disciplinary discussions for a further development of the “morphome” concept.
