Queer Representations, Debates and Activism in Contemporary Germany

From the mid-nineteenth century label of contrary-sexual to the nationalistic Männerheld and the sado-masochistic homofascist, representations and discourse on German queerness, and in particular depictions of male same-sex love, have been dominated by assumptions and images derived from unenlightened national stereotypes (such as le vice allemande), the language of disease and aberration and the darkest chapter of the German twentieth century. The cinematic work of Richard Oswald, Liliana Cavani and Doris Dörrie are just a few filmic representations that engage with some of the common stereotypes of German queerness. This panel invites papers that discuss contemporary debates that are raging in the contemporary queer and LGBT community in German-speaking Europe as well as filmic, literary and cultural representations of queerness that defy and transcend culturally hegemonic prejudices and representations of queer and LGBT identities in the German-speaking countries.

Possible topics include but are not limited to:

Queer self-representation in cinema, art, literature and society
Newly emerging stereotypes in the German-speaking queer and LGBT community
How queer and LGBT identity intersects with class
How queer and LGBT identity intersects with national identity
Empowering spaces and cultural symbols for the queer and LGBT community
How capital and consumptive patterns contribute to the emergence of queer identity
How authorial voices representing queer are in tension with dominant culture
Transnational and transcultural representations of queer in German cultural media
The current surge of the HIV epidemic among German gay men
Cultural comparative analyses and international perspectives on German queerness
