BeschreibungCFP: Negotiating Difference in Contemporary German-Language Literature

Proposed special session for the Modern Language Association Annual Convention in Los Angeles, CA, January 6-9, 2011

“Das Ostdeutsche und das Fremde, das Zugewanderte: das sind zwei Provinzen der Mainstreamkultur.” Feridun Zaimoğlu

Over the last decade, growing media coverage and the heightened interest of publishing houses have given authors of non-German or ‘hyphenated’ origin a higher profile in the literary market place and a louder voice in the public sphere. At the same time, debates about “parallel societies” and an increasing uneasiness with the growing influence of political Islam point to the precariousness of a globalized, multicultural, unified German society. The panel is interested how contemporary German-language texts thematize these and other tensions between mainstream and margin in literary and non-literary texts (such as essays, speeches, Poetikvorlesungen). How are notions of difference and alterity articulated and negotiated? Possible foci are transnational literature and the literature of migration, but also East German writing.

Please e-mail proposals of no more than 500 words and short bio no later than March 2, 2010 to Anke Biendarra (, University of California, Irvine.
