Panel topic: Tragedy and The Tragic in German Literature, History, and
Politics

Abstracts for papers are requested for a proposed interdisciplinary
panel at the 34th German Studies Association conference (October 7-10,
2010, Oakland, CA) on the concept and forms of "the tragic" in art,
history, and politics.

In the 1950s George Steiner influentially declared tragedy to be dead.
It succumbed to the pressures of modernization and had outlived its
usefulness, surviving only as an outmoded literary form. Yet modern
history still calls for a form of thought and art adequate to its many
horrors. Recent work -- in particular Karl Heinz Bohrer's /Das
Tragische: Erscheinung, Pathos, Klage/ -- suggests a more differentiated
way of thinking about "the tragic" in its relation to experience. This
panel will take up the question of what purchase "the tragic" may or may
not have on modernity in the German world.

Prospective contributors are invited to submit proposals of about 250
words to Steve Dowden at dowden@brandeis.edu by February 12.
