BeschreibungCfP GSA 2010: (Trans)Nationalism and the German City

Abstracts for papers are requested for a proposed interdisciplinary panel series at the 34th German Studies Association conference (October 7-10, 2010, Oakland, CA) on the dialectic of transnational and local city life from a variety of media. Papers should seek to answer such questions as: What makes individual German (and Austrian and Swiss) cities unique, whether now or at some period in the past? The built city? Urban culture? Socioeconomic conditions? Politics? Self-presentation? How does the distinctively local balance out with participation in trends that are regional, national, and transnational/global? Proposals for papers or entire panels that explore city life from a variety of perspectives - literature, music, art, architecture, film, anthropology, history, religion, geography, etc. - are welcome.

This series of panels is organized by Jeffry M. Diefendorf (University of New Hampshire; jeffryd[a]unh.edu), Rolf J. Goebel (University of Alabama in Huntsville; goebelr[a]uah.edu), and Janet Ward (University of Nevada Las Vegas; janet.ward[a]unlv.edu). Note that proposal submissions should be completed via the GSA website by the deadline of February 15, 2010. Applicants are requested to indicate in their GSA online submissions whether the abstracts are intended for the above series of panels. Please see the GSA website (www.thegsa.org) for general information about the online submission process.
