Panel Topic: The Return of Stefan George

Thirty-Fourth Annual Conference, October 7 - October 10, 2010, in Oakland, California.

Submission Deadline: Feb. 12, 2010

After a half century of relative obscurity, Stefan George has recently returned to the center of scholarly and public attention. Within the last decade, three major biographical studies and several specialized monographs have appeared, the Stefan George-Jahrbuch (first published 1996/97) has emerged as the central forum for discussion of his works and influence, the George-Gesellschaft has held annual conferences, and George’s legacy is the subject of increased discussion in German newspapers and periodicals. In this session we want to explore this resurgence of interest in George and his Circle: what is it, exactly, that is driving this rediscovery? How does it—or does it?—relate to the shifting political and cultural climate in the “Berliner Republik”? What, if anything, remains relevant from the ideology of the George-Circle today? Proposals concerning all aspects of George’s and his followers’ works and their current reemergence are welcome, in particular proposals that address their renewed, or continuing, literary, cultural, and political impact and relevance.

Potential contributors are invited to submit proposals in German or
English of no more than 250 words to Robert E. Norton at Norton.15@nd.edu
