Ecological poetry between warning, mourning and dreaming: Post-idyllic landscapes and contemporary visions of paradise
How is nature represented in contemporary poetry and what role does it play in defining lyric today? Does the lyrical genre in the 'post-idyllic age' still serve as a space for utopian visions of paradise landscapes and, if so, are there cultural differences in natural places of perfection? Or does contemporary poetry in the 'ecological age' rather represent environmental destruction realistically and thus imply ecological critique? This seminar seeks to examine continuities in and transformations of the pastoral tradition, focusing on the relationship between poetry and ecology. Thus, it calls for papers that analyze poems on nature from any culture or those that show, using an ecocritical approach, the influence of ecological discourse on contemporary poetry. Given that the environmental movement, as early as in the 1960s and 1970s, led to the emergence of American Ecological Poetry that still flourishes today, maybe even more, it is especially interesting to investigate whether other literatures have similarly reacted to environmental changes and to what extent differences in their discourse are due to different environmental situations and different national politics. Thereby, the panel will confront global ideals with regional problems and discuss the function and aesthetics of poetry as a medium of ecological reflection.
